On Twitter’s New API Guidelines and Pocket Integration

August 17th, 2012  •  By Nate

We’ve received a number of questions from users and our own developer community about Twitter’s new API guidelines and how it affects use of Pocket with Twitter.

Specifically, we wanted to clarify questions around the following rule in Twitter’s new Display Guidelines:

b. No other social or 3rd party actions may be attached to a Tweet.

We have a strong relationship with Twitter so we reached out to their team for further clarification. We’ve been told that the new API guidelines are not intended to affect or hamper your ability to integrate Pocket with Twitter apps or clients. The ‘social actions’ refer to Twitter’s own actions like Fav, RT, and Reply.

Your Pocket integration with Twitter and third party clients will continue to work like normal. As always, we’ll continue to keep our developers and users in the loop.

p.s. If you want to test that saving works just to be sure, you can always try saving any of the content from @PocketHits!

Available Now: Pocket’s New Safari Extension, plus Updates for Chrome and More

August 1st, 2012  •  By Mark

Today we’re releasing a number of updates intended to make it even easier for you to save to Pocket from your browser—and also quickly see what’s in your queue.

The new updates include a brand new Safari Extension, a new Chrome web app and updated Chrome Extension, and an updated bookmarklet (which will automatically update in your browser).

Here are all the details:

Pocket Safari Extension

With Pocket’s new Safari Extension, you can save from anywhere inside the browser. Just click the Pocket icon (above) to save content, or right-click (below) to save any links you find along the way. You can also save directly from Twitter and Google Reader with just one click:

Download the free Pocket Safari Extension.

Updated Chrome Extension

We’ve also pushed out an update to our Chrome Extension for saving to Pocket, as well as a new Chrome web app that gives you a shortcut to quickly access what’s in your Pocket.

Download the Pocket Chrome Extension.

Get the new Chrome web app.

Updated Bookmarklet

Finally, we’ve also updated Pocket’s bookmarklet—it now includes a “View List” button so you can quickly see what’s in your Pocket.

If you haven’t yet added our bookmarklet to your browser, here’s how to do it.

If you’re a Firefox user, you can also download our recently updated Pocket Extension here. And for more on all of Pocket’s browser extensions and app integrations, check out our App Directory.

As always, you can go to Pocket Support for questions and feedback. Thanks for your support!

How to Use RIL with the new Twitter for iPhone

December 13th, 2011  •  By Mark

A number of people who use the Twitter iPhone app have asked us: Where did the Read It Later button go? It’s there, but there are now a couple extra taps involved.

Yes, Read It Later is in the new Twitter. Here’s how to set it up:

1. Go to Me > Settings > Advanced > Read Later and link your Read It Later account

2. For any tweet with a link you want to add to Read It Later, you’ll now tap through the link before getting to the share menu:

Two Other Ways to Use Read It Later with Twitter

1. If you miss the one click save from the timeline, we recommend you check out some other Twitter clients with RiL quick add support—there are over 45 of them!—including apps like: Tweetbot, Echofon, Tweetlogix, Twittelator Neue, Twitterrific, and Tweetcaster.

2. Another cool option for syncing Read It Later with Twitter is a service called ifttt (if this then that). It’s an awesome utility for automating things in your life—they call these “recipes.”

For example, here’s a recipe that lets you automatically add any “favorited” tweet to Read It Later.

If you like ifttt, here are some other recipes we recommend with Read It Later.*

If you have any other suggestions, let us know!

*Note: ifttt currently is only one-way, so while you can add to Read It Later from Twitter, marking it archived in Read It Later won’t remove it as a favorite in Twitter.

Read It Later now has it’s own Twitter account.  I’ve separated it from the main @IdeaShower account.
