Saving to Read It Later From Twitter

NOTE This has been temp. disabled while some Twitter API issues are sorted out. I suggest you check out one of the Twitter clients that support Read It Later in the meantime. I should have this resolved soon.

You can save items to your list directly from your favorite Twitter client. (List of Twitter clients with native RIL support)

After setting it up (see below), simply send a tweet or direct message to @add2readitlater with a link and it will be saved to your reading list.

How to Use It

Step 1: Add a Twitter username to your account

You need to tell Read It Later what your Twitter username is so it knows where to save your links. Add one or more Twitter usernames to your account on your services page. If you do not have a Read It Later account, sign up here.

Note: Protected accounts can only send links via DM.

Step 2: Post to Twitter (Accepts @replies or DMs)

Send a title and a link to @add2readitlater. Format the post like this:

Example: @add2readitlater The Daily Puppy http://www.dailypuppy.com/

Important Note about Using DMs

Read It Later does not confirm/validate Twitter accounts that are subscribed to. On one hand this allows users to do a few interesting things (see below), but it also means that this method of saving links should not be used for anything that needs to be 100% private. Any user can subscribe to the links you've sent @add2readitlater, even DMs. DMs should be used as a way to send links without cluttering your tweet stream, not as a method of securely sending information to Read It Later.

Some Interesting Ways to Use This

The ability to add pages from Twitter allows you to do some interesting things:

Share with your friends or subscribe to others' saved items

You can add any Twitter username to your account. This means you can subscribe to other user's publicly tweeted links and they will be saved into your account as well. If you would like a friend to be able to save items into your list without giving them full access to your account, simply add their Twitter username to your account. Afterwards, they'll have the ability to send links to your reading list!

Save from unsupported devices

If you are using a device that is currently not well supported, but the device has a Twitter client you can still save to Read It Later. Learn about more ways to save.

What's Planned

Support for the following features is planned:

  • Converting any shortened URLS to actual link
  • Automatically retrieving the page title so a title is not required
  • Saving multiple links at a time

If you'd like to see something else included/changed, please Make a Suggestion!
